Notes for Sally (Spouse 1)
Sally Cummings' father was determined by tracing her marriage to Ford Plaisted to the New Hampshire Vital records. There it was recorded that both Sally and Ford were from New Hampton, NH. There were only two Cummings families (Isaac and Elisha Jr.) in the census of 1790 in New Hampton. There is a Genealogy of the Town of New Hampton, NH (in Gordon Nash Library) which lists all the children for Isaac Cummings (no Sally listed). Also, all of the five sons of Elisha are listed and the fact that he had a daughter. The name of the daughter is not listed. However, the census of 1790 indicates that he had a daughter. This daughter must be Sally based on a process of elimination since Isaac Cummings was not Sally's father and Elisha Cummings is the only other possibility. Also the following additional facts clearly point to Sally as the daughter of Elisha Cummings Jr.
The three eldest sons of Elisha Cummings Jr. went with Ford Plaisted, who Sally married at age 17, to Peacham, Vermont. Later Elisha Cummings joined his sons (& Sally) in Peacham where he died in 1828. In New Hampton, the land of Elisha Cummings was between Ford Plaisted and his father, William Plaisted. Thus it was clear how Ford meet Sally in a sparsely populated wilderness.
A further analysis of all Sally Cummings listed in the Cummings Memorial and the Cummings Genealogy shows that there is no Sally or Sadie or any similar named Cummings within two years of the right age. Checks of the Vital Records in both New Hampshire and Vermont do not give any additional information. In fact, the pattern is that the Cummings and the Plaisted families in question were not strong in record keeping.
Thus all known facts support the conclusion that Elisha Cummings Jr was Sally's father.
